We were reading November’s Ideal Home and were instantly drawn to a quote that we couldn’t ignore.
“What gives a house individual charm is when it reflects what a family likes rather than being a show house for what’s in fashion.”

It echoes our own sentiments here at Lefton’s so much, but we do have to add…..the two ideas aren’t mutually exclusive. There are some styles that never go out of fashion, the mainstays of a family home that inexplicably make you feel warm and cosy instantly.
When you flick through the household features in all the glossies, are you not inclined to ask yourself page after page…..but where do they keep their stuff?
Minimalist idylls peppered with the odd artefact make for great photographs but leave many people feeling the look is unachievable, unless, of course, you’re fortunate enough to live in an eight bedroomed semi mansion where you can hide all your stuff when the visitors arrive!
Classically family heirlooms sit alongside the kids’ toys and that corner of the house you refer to as the home office, leaving little chance of achieving that large open space feeling for which a part of you yearns.
If this is your home to a tee, there is a happy medium. Contemporary furniture is all about the storage to facilitate that decluttered look! Furniture doesn’t have to be fitted to offer you valuable hidey holes. Just as many people seek out free standing pieces which can complement a room just as effectively as a painting might a wall……you just have to be clear what it is you’re after.
And you don’t have to totally rework entire rooms – the good news is that eclecticism is in! You can mix all manner of styles together and still be on trend in the interior design stakes!
As the old adage goes – variety is the spice of life!
